The continous struggle for the Community Development Team to inform council about how to communicate with the community members (rate payers) to establish public space for everybody in the Redlands, young people's issues, develop a safe community and empower the community members in decision making was something that the CD team struggled with for 8 years. Good staff who stood up for the community and "fought fair" have left and it is clear that RCC is on a downhill path. Although I left RCC in 2007 I still hear from community members how things are in the Redlands and unfortunately it is not good news.
How ignorant to not keep Aerograffix informed about artwork that was commissioned and discussing preventative measures in rectifying the matter. Interesting to see the emails between you Christian and the council officers - obviously it does not mean anything, no responsibility is taken and back flips are common.
Christian celebrate and put your energy in to council's that are open to include the community in projects and planning in its true sense and keep up your good work and professionalism.
Rita Ackermann

j comments on Capalaba Square

Moreover, the institutions which are allegedly in place for 'supporting' visual artists, such as schools, museums, galleries, and non-profit organizations, act as parasitic forces on the vast majority of artists. The art school I attended sucked its students financially dry while sabotaging their careers. At the very least, the artists could have been notified of what was to happen to their artwork. Christian Griffiths is a dedicated artist and citizen that has worked for the good of his community and the people of Brisbane for so many years now that it ought to make many councillors and community leaders blush in the light of their own lack of experience by comparison. He deserves a measure of respect to be shown to him by Local Government Authorities, for whom I am sure he has jumped through many hoops and dealt with unbelievable bureaucracy in order to furnish them with programs that most likely benefit them more than him.

Our communities need more people like Christian, not less, which is just the type of results that will be achieved by sweeping away their hard earned community projects in broad strokes. These people, through much hard work and little reward, are advocates of reason and sensibility that help to bridge the divides between the disenfranchised and general society and help to divert vulnerable people from harmful lifestyles that they may already be skirting the boundaries of. They are tireless and determined people of real and tangible benefit to our communities, not that anyone would know it by the way they are treated by certain influential sections of society.

The only way I can understand how this happened, is that the owner of the building does not like the artwork and is feeling bent out of shape over having it located on one of their building's public boundaries and has gone ahead without the approval of the Local Government Authority and covered the mural under the guise of renovations, which, to be fair, in many instances does not need approval by the LGA. It beggars belief though, that the building owner would think it acceptable to proceed in such a manner, without seeking approval, to remove from view a large public artwork that would clearly have a considerable trail of planning and paperwork in it's inception. If this is the case and and has now been brought to the attention of the LGA, the non compliant development should be returned to its previous state at the owners expense, as would be the case for other non compliant developments.

If this is the result of a directive from the council, then that is just disgusting and the responsible parties ought to be reprimanded, perhaps to the point of being fired or demoted. For if they are fool enough to approve this travesty, it raises serious concerns that; should they be in charge of anything that could have the potential for greater harm that they would also fall below the acceptable standards required of people in those public decision making roles.

This following statement I realise is quite cynical and generalised but its because I'm quite pissed off about the destruction of this artwork. Sadly, to me it seems that this type of action is endemic to the bland design, awful lack of vision and lack of foresight for our built environments shown by planning departments across the nation. Truly we are the lucky country by sheer chance and not because we are the masters of our destiny.

Please excuse my grammatical errors as this was written hastily and in anger of seeing an old friends hard work destroyed so readily.

Jesiah Davis.
Faculty of the Built Environment.
University of New South Wales.

Jharris comments on Capalaba Square

Struggling to find (polite) words to describe what I think of this attrocity.
